Decreasing The Plastic Usage on Campus to Contribute Sustainability

We came together as a team of different interests and hobbies, and by observing our surroundings, we came up with a common idea about the problem of the future, resource use. Moreover, environmental pollution and overconsumption are increasing day by day. The best way to save the environment was recycling and decreasing excessive consumption in each place. After Bilkent University declared this year as the year of Sustainability, we started from the students' behavior on campus; plastic usage in the campus was unavoidably serious. The waste of plastic bottles, bags, meal boxes, and their manufacturing process released tons of carbon dioxide. This will contribute to the environment, which has complied with greenhouse gases for decades, and cut the expense for water needs.

To motivate students, we have come up with an idea of friendly competition between other universities, especially METU and Hacettepe University. The competition will consist of different periods and aims to decrease plastic usage in Bilkent and different places. The project's first stage is informing students about the possible outcomes and dangers of plastic overconsumption; many have an idea but have no urge to start. Therefore, promoting the project with a poster and showing alternative raw materials for common plastic products will raise awareness about the topic. There is a need to cut the usage of plastic bags by having a cloth bag for shopping and preferring reusable plastic meal boxes for the takeaway method of cafeterias which arose just after the pandemic. Not only posters but also social media and universities’ organizations/clubs will act as an essential role in reaching people. Afterward, the project should focus on motivating students to act upon the idea; a reward system will be promoted to do this. The data will be collected in an electronic environment, Jotform, to be measured; after each period, the university with the most participants will win the award of “Sustainable University.”
